The OHSU Center for Women’s Health is one of 20 National Centers of Excellence in Women’s Health (CoEs) that provide innovative and integrated health care systems for women. Located on the 7th floor of the 335,000 sf Peter O. Kohler Pavilion, the center represents a collaboration among patient advocates, care providers, researchers and volunteers to create a more comprehensive and compassionate model for addressing women’s health concerns.
Everything in the 30,000 sf facility is designed to enhance the patient experience while offering cutting-edge health care for women including a state-of-the-art clinical and imaging center, an educational resource center, a tea bar and shop stocked with items of interest to women, and a demonstration kitchen. Our team designed the interior architecture to convey a healing, spa-like environment, focusing on the link between inside and outside. Natural materials including a stone, slate and cherry wood were used throughout. Decorative art glass highlights entrances, conference rooms and children’s waiting areas. Soft, curving forms are a recurring theme in ceilings, architectural elements and furnishings.
The imaging center is designed to feel like a day spa. There are eight private dressing rooms featuring cherry cabinetry, a soft-green color palette, doors with opaque glass inlays and full-length mirrors.
Artwork by locally and nationally acclaimed artists was an integral part of the design. A special tapestry containing artifacts from patients’ lives was commissioned for the entry. The center boasts stunning views of Portland and Mt. Hood. Water features and sculpture enhance the healing aspects of the surrounding gardens.
